The specifics of planting and care of juniper

To reproduce almost all varieties of creeping juniper without exception, well-preserved semi-lignified cuttings are required. Seed propagation is also possible, but there are great risks that the main characteristics of a particular variety will be lost.

Juniper growth is quite slow. As noted earlier, the development of the plant requires sun or relative shading.

Juniper is quite difficult to tolerate the transplant process, so it is important to immediately determine its location.

The rooting of the plant should be taken care of in advance. To do this, from the second half of April or in the first half of May, cuttings are cut from an adult juniper, the length of which must be at least 10 cm. It is important that the piece of old wood - the so-called heel - is preserved on the handle. About 5 cm of needles are removed from the prepared part of the plant from the bottom without damaging the bark.

Before planting, the stalk must be incubated for half an hour in a specially designed solution to stimulate root formation. The soil intended for planting creeping juniper in a container should consist of 50% peat and 50% sand. The handle is densely pressed down by the ground and covered with a small piece of film. In order to prevent drying out of the plant, juniper must be periodically sprayed with water. After about 1-1.5 months, the rooting of the cutting occurs. At this time, you can plant cuttings in open ground.

In the first year, the plant needs special care until it gains enough strength. As a rule, it consists in sheltering the plants during the period of frost and for the winter. For this, they usually use spruce branches or burlap. It will not be superfluous to sprinkle the crown so that the needles of the plant do not dry out.

Feeding the creeping juniper is necessary only in early spring, since excessively fertile soil can cause the juniper to lose its open forms of the crown.

Overview of the various varieties

Modern garden decoration uses more than 100 different varieties of creeping juniper. The creeping crown of most varieties of this plant is quite open, which creates special conveniences for designers in arranging landscape compositions.

A rather interesting option for creeping juniper is the variety Andorra Compact.

The size of the plant in the altitude reaches 40 cm. This is a fairly compact type of shrub with a symmetrical crown. Like all juniper representatives, Andorra Compact grows rather slowly, increasing by 1 cm on average per year. Ash-green needles with the onset of cold weather acquire a lilac tint.

Another very attractive juniper is Blue Chip. An individual plant reaches a height of only 30 cm. Its crown in diameter can be 150 cm. Compared to the previous variety of Blue Chip needles, it is more rigid and prickly. The plant is particularly attractive due to the unusual bluish-blue color of the needles, which, with a significant decrease in temperature, acquires brown, violet or purple hues. A distinctive feature of this variety of juniper is that the Blue Chip, despite the high content of exhaust or industrial gases in the air, can easily take root and develop in urban conditions.

In comparison with the representatives of junipers indicated above, the variety is recognized taller Variegatta. The growth of this plant variety is slightly more than half a meter. The crown is pillow-shaped, can reach a diameter of 300 cm. In addition, the Variegatt variety is also distinguished by its rather rapid growth. An individual plant can increase in diameter by 30 cm per year, and in height - by 12 cm. Satisfied tender and soft needles have dark tones of blue-green hues.
