Blueberry propagation methods

If a gardener is interested in propagating blueberries with cuttings, videos with a detailed description of the process will be able to fully satisfy his curiosity. Of course, it’s important to always double-check the information. Amateur gardeners exchange experiences, but sometimes, voluntarily or involuntarily, give not quite correct advice. The ease with which you can shoot your own video and upload to open hosting, leads to the fact that truly useful knowledge is lost in the mass of informational garbage.

What is this berry

To separate the grains from the chaff, one should critically perceive the recommendations of unfamiliar authors if they are not supported by anything. If necessary, you can always find materials from authoritative sources or see publications on a topic of interest in recognized encyclopedias. Another way is self-education and personal experience.

Blueberries are a delicious blueberry from the heather family. Her closest relatives: cranberries, lingonberries and blueberries are loved by the people. Along with blueberries, they are rich in vitamins and a whole set of extremely useful trace elements.

Blueberries are sometimes called drunkards, fools, waterdrops and gonobeli, they attribute to it a stupefying, headache-causing effect. Because of this, some gardeners do not plant it in their plots. Which is wrong and wrong, because medicine does not confirm this fact. According to the observations of naturalists, the dope inspires a rosemary, which often blooms in the immediate vicinity of thickets of blueberries.

Blueberries are unpretentious and rarely sick. She skillfully resists pests and parasites. It is easy to plant and propagate by cuttings. It has been checked many times: blueberries from their garden do not cause any headache, but they strengthen the human immune system.

The secrets of growing delicious blueberries

Propagation by cuttings - a proven way

Like most heather, blueberries are easily propagated by cuttings, if elementary rules have not been violated. It is not difficult to prepare the cuttings, because blueberries are shrubs with lignified stems that are almost ready for further action after cutting:

  1. In autumn, they select the best shoots, cut them, and bundling them, store them until spring in a refrigerator or cellar at + 2 ... + 3 ° С.
  2. In the spring they make culling of stems with signs of illness or drying out.
  3. The remaining stems are cut into cuttings 10-15 cm long for medium and tall varieties and 7-8 cm for short.
  4. On each handle, directly below the lower kidney, an oblique cut is made. The upper section is horizontal, 2-3 cm above the kidney.

When the air in the greenhouses warms up to a constant temperature of + 20 ° C, the cuttings are planted in the prepared soil from a mixture of sand, peat, bark and overripe sawdust. Cover with a film on top (possible with the installation of arcs).

The distance between the cuttings is 5-10 cm, depending on how long they will develop in the greenhouse. The longer, the more space is required so that the roots do not begin to conflict with each other. With regular watering and top dressing after 7-8 weeks, the cuttings will turn into seedlings. They will get stronger and the film can be removed. Further depends on the terrain and climate. In moderate latitudes, transplantation into open ground is done in August. Where early autumn and fast onset of cold weather, blueberry seedlings are better to winter in the greenhouse until spring.

Green cuttings

Green cuttings - worth a try

Recently, the propagation of blueberries with green shoots has become popular. The processes that have not yet managed to lignify. The ability of the green stem to take root depends on the ability of the plant to generate calluses at the site of the wound (slice) - special cells that create tissue that resembles a cork that protects the wound from infection. Through this tissue, the formation of adventitious roots. Proponents of the method emphasize the following benefits:

  • seedlings are transferred all the qualities inherent in the mother plant;
  • a more powerful root system compared to seedlings from lignified cuttings or seeds;
  • plants from green cuttings are healthier and more durable, if the aerial part freezes out, the roots retain the ability to give new shoots in the spring.

Such strong, healthy roots can be used for root propagation.

The main disadvantage of green cuttings is that they root in August and do not have time to ripen by the onset of cold weather, therefore they require the organization of wintering.

It is sometimes noted that such seedlings, in spite of their good and rapid development, bear fruit longer, and in this they are inferior to shrubs grown from traditional lignified cuttings. Nevertheless, supporters of green cuttings are growing every year.

Growing blueberries

And not just cuttings

Blueberries can be grown from seeds, but not every summer resident can do such a troublesome job. You need to be a true enthusiast. In laboratories, seedlings are grown from leaflets or even from individual cells. At the same time, they give the plant new properties so that a separate variety is obtained.

The laboratory method is also not for the ordinary gardener, but by buying a seedling from the nursery, using the propagation technique with lignified or green cuttings or root processes, you can grow your own plantation of wonderful blueberries.
